  • Specification: The system consists of:
    1. Sample introduction system with peristaltic pump, nebulizer (borosilicate glass), Scott-type double-pass (quartz) spray chamber with high matrix introduction system.
    2. Plasma system with RF generator of Solid state digital drive of 27 MHz Variable-frequency impedance, 2.5 mm id injector Shield Torch system, Mass flow controllers (Ar) of Plasma, Aux., Carrier, Make up/Dilution.
    3. Interface of sampling cone of 1 mm diameter orifice Standard: Ni-tipped with Cu base and Ni skimmer cone of 0.4 mm diameter orifice.

Working Principles
  • Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer couples use of an ICP with MS for elemental analysis by generation of ions. The ICP is involved in generation of a high temperature plasma source at 10,000 degree Celsius, through which the pre-treated sample is passed. Plasma is a stream of highly ionized gas containing an equal number of electrons and positive ions. It is electrically conductive and is affected by magnetic field. The high temperature attained by this plasma inside the system helps in ionization of elements and thereby in detecting them. Mass spectrometer is used as detector.
Applications
It is used mainly for quantitative analysis of elements at trace level. Following elements can be analysed:
  • Multi-elements: Ag, Al, As, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Ga, In, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, TI, V, U, Zn, B, Ge, Mo, Nb, P, Re, S, Si, Ta, Ti, W, Zr
  • Rare earth element: Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu

User Instructions
  1. Element will be only analyzed from soil, water and plant samples.
  2. Micro wave digested sample should be submitted in solution form specifying the elements to be estimated and their approximate concentrations expected, but the Total dissolved Solid in the solution should not exceed preferably 500 ppm.
  3. In case Microwave digestion has to be done, the same may be communicated to the Incharge.
  4. Generally 10 ml of solution is sufficient for estimation of about 10 to 15 elements.
  5. Explosive, poisonous samples and samples giving rise to toxic gases/fumes cannot be undertaken for ICP-MS analysis.
  6. A minimum of 20 samples should be submitted for analysis.
  7. The user should specify if their samples have HF content as glass is part of the spray chamber.
  8. The concentration of analyte in samples should be less than 100 ppb for ICP-MS.
